Reverse Appliqué “HEART” Sweatshirt Instructions

Step 1: Cut your pattern pieces to approx. 3 ½ inch squares. You will need about 30 squares. Sew 5 rows with 6 squares to a row.

Step 2: Cut the batting or fusible fleece so it’s slightly bigger than your top cotton fabric. Layer the top fabric, batting or fusible fleece, and back fabric together to form a sandwich. If you’re using batting, you may find it helpful to use quilting basting spray to keep the layers from shifting.

Step 3: Quilt the batting to the top fabric using your preferred method. You can hand embroider, or use a sewing machine to stitch a simple grid or basket-weave pattern. (I used my embroidery machine with a design file from Designs by JuJu.)

Step 4: Using your ruler and rotary cutter cut the edges to a clean edge.

Step 5: Use Parchment paper, Sharpie, ruler and draw your ½ heart. Cut out with scissors.

Step 6: Fold your quilted piece in ½ and pin your parchment heart with the fold line to the fold.

Step 7: Cut out your quilted heart.

Step 8: Lay out your sweatshirt, and place your quilted heart where you want it to go on the front of your sweatshirt. Using pins, pin the pins along the edge of your quilted heart. Do not pin your quilted heart to your sweatshirt yet. This gives you an ‘idea’ of where to place your heart from the inside once you flip your sweatshirt inside out.

Step 9: With the pins in place, turn your sweatshirt inside out.

Step 10: Pin your quilted heart to the inside of the sweatshirt.

Step 11: Go to your sewing machine and sew a ¼ inch seam allowance around your heart. Remove the pins and turn your sweatshirt back out. You will see the outline of your heart you just sewn.

Step 12: Carefully, using your scissors snip away the inside of the heart. This will reveal your beautiful, quilted heart you just created.

Step 13: After a wash, your sweatshirt edges will curl up and provide a beautiful, finished edge.
