Tips for working with metallic thread:

• Metallic thread tends to unravel and fray easily. Try working with shorter lengths at a time

(e.g. distance from hand to elbow). Pay close attention to the thread at both the front and

the back of the the fabric to minimize twisting and fraying.

• The number of strands of thread needed will vary depending on the brand and type of

thread. Before starting the project, try a few stitches on a scrap of felt to confirm the desired

The Lovers

Step 1: Using the pattern, cut the following felt pieces: two black rectangles, two red hearts, one gray label.

Step 2: Using tracing paper and stylus, trace the text onto the gray felt label. Or, use a heat-erase pen to hand-letter the text.

Step 3: Embroider the text using four strands of black metallic thread and a backstitch.

Step 4: Use a ruler and heat-erase pen to draw the hanging lines so they’re parallel to the side of the card. Draw past the location of the bottom of the heart. Use these lines to align the top and bottom of the hearts so they appear to hang perfectly.

Step 5: Appliqué the hearts using purple metallic thread (two strands) with an overhand stitch. Embroider the two hanging lines using silver thread (one strand) and a stem stitch.

Step 6: Using tracing paper and stylus, trace the stars and corner accents onto the black felt card. Or draw using a heat-erase pen. Using a single strand of gold thread, embroider the stars and corner accents.

Step 7: Layer the gray label at the bottom of the card. Layer the embroidered card on top of the second felt rectangle.

Step 8: Cut a 6” length of ribbon and fold in half to form a hanging loop. Insert it between the two card layers at the top of the card, and pin in place if desired. Stitch around the entire border using gold floss and a backstitch, leaving a scant ¼” border. Begin and end the thread between the two layers.

Step 9: Knot at the end. Hide knot under seam by poking needle between the two layers at the seam, and then up through the back side of the project. Cut the loose end of the thread and pull it into the interior of the project.

Step 10: Use a blow dryer or other heat source to eliminate any heat-erasable marks. Use a few dabs of Liquid Stitch to hold down the open top edge of the label.

The Moon

Step 1: Using the pattern, cut the following felt pieces: two purple rectangles, one gray moon, one gray label.

Step 2: Using tracing paper and stylus, trace the text onto the gray felt label. Or, use a heat-erase pen to hand-letter the text.

Step 3: Embroider the text using four strands of black metallic thread and a backstitch.

Step 4: Using tracing paper and a stylus, trace the clouds, stars, and corner accents onto the purple felt card. Or draw using a heat-erase pen.

Step 5: Appliqué the moon using silver thread (two strands) with an overhand stitch.

Step 6: Using gold thread (all strands), embroider the clouds with a backstitch.

Step 7: Using a single strand of silver thread, embroider the stars and corner accents.

Step 8: Layer the gray label at the bottom of the card. Layer the embroidered card on top of the second felt rectangle.

Step 9: Cut a 6” length of ribbon and fold in half to form a hanging loop. Insert it between the two card layers at the top of the card, and pin in place if desired. Stitch around the entire border using gold floss and a backstitch, leaving a scant ¼” border. Begin and end the thread between the two layers.

Step 10: Knot at the end. Hide knot under seam by poking needle between the two layers at the seam, and then up through the back side of the project. Cut the loose end of the thread and pull it into the interior of the project.

Step 11: Use a blow dryer or heat source to eliminate any heat-erasable marks. Use a few dabs of Liquid Stitch to hold down the open top edge of the label.

The Sun

Step 1: Using the pattern, cut the following felt pieces: two red rectangles, one green hill, one gray label.

Step 2: Using tracing paper and stylus, trace the text onto the gray felt label. Or, use a heat-erase pen to hand-letter the text.

Step 3: Embroider the text using four strands of black metallic thread and a backstitch.

Step 4: Using tracing paper and stylus, trace the sun onto the red felt card. Or, cut out the sun and use a heat-erase pen to trace around it.

Step 5: Embroider the sun using gold thread (all strands) with a backstitch. Sew on small gold beads for the eyes if desired.

Step 6: Using tracing paper and a stylus, trace the stars and corner accents onto the red felt card. Or use a heat-erase pen to draw them. Using a single strand of silver thread, embroider the stars and corner accents.

Step 7: Cut the green felt piece into a hill shape, and layer on top of the red.

Step 8: Layer the gray label on top of the green at the bottom of the card.

Use a few dabs of Liquid Stitch to hold down the open top edges of the hill and the label.
