Supply List
Fabric
Background Fabric – 1 fat quarter or ½ yard
Heart Fabric – 1–2 fat quarters total
Use a variety of coordinating fabrics for the heart block.

Binding Fabric – ¼ yard
(Can be pulled from one of the coordinating fabrics for a cohesive finish)Backing Fabric – 12x12 square
(May coordinate or contrast with the front of the block)Seam Ripper (just in case!)
Quilted Heart Instructions
Step 1: Cut Fabric – Final Heart Square will be made up of a total of 16 squares
Solid Squares
Cut solid fabric squares to 2½" x 2½" (total of 8 squares)
Two-Fabric Squares (create 8 paired squares)
Cut squares to 3" x 3"
Each square will pair:
1 colorful / patterned fabric with 1 background fabric
Step 2: Create the Quilt Top Units (with paired 3" Squares)
1. Place one colorful square and one background square with right sides together.
2. Using a disappearing ink pen, draw a line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the background square.
3. Stitch ¼" away from the drawn line on both sides of the line.
4. Cut directly on the drawn line to create two half-square triangle units.
5. Press seams open or to one side. Trim excess seam corner.
Repeat for all paired 3" squares.
Step 3: Sew Units Into Rows
1. Arrange blocks into four rows, following your heart layout.
2. Sew pieces together in sets of two using a ¼" seam allowance.
3. Press seams consistently.
4. Repeat for all four rows.
Step 4: Join Rows
1. Sew the top row to the next row using a ¼" seam.
2. Repeat with the bottom two rows.
3. Press seams.
Step 5: Sew Rows Together
Sew the top half to the bottom half, joining across the middle.
Press seams flat.
Step 6: Add Side Borders
1. Cut border strips 1½" wide.
2. Sew strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top first.
3. Press seams.
4. Sew strips to the left and right sides.
5. Press again.
Step 7: Create the Quilt Sandwich & Quilt
1. Layer:
- Backing (right side down)
- Batting
- Quilt top (right side up)
2. Baste using pins, clips, or spray.
3. Quilt in your desired pattern or leave unquilted for a cleaner, modern look.
Step 8: Square Up the Quilt Sandwich
1. Place the quilted piece on a cutting mat.
2. Using a square ruler, trim all four sides:
Align ruler with seams and center design.
Trim excess batting and backing evenly.
3. Continue adjusting until the block measures exactly 10" x 10".
Step 9: Add Binding
Prepare binding strips.
Sew binding to the front using a ¼" seam.
Fold to the back and finish by hand or machine.
