Instructions:
Step 1: Cut the following rectangles:
- (7) 7 ½” x 12 ½” from the large semicircle fabric
- (7) 5 ½” x 8 ½” from the medium semicircle fabric
- (7) 3 ½” x 4 ½” from the small semicircle fabric
Step 2: Cut the following from the medium weight woven interfacing:
- (7) 7 ½” x 12 ½”
- (7) 5 ½” x 8 ½”
- (7) 3 ½” x 4 ½”
Step 3: Match fabric pieces with corresponding sized interfacing pieces and adhere interfacing to fabric according to the manufacturer’s directions.
Small semicircles
Step 4:
- Fold one small semicircle fabric piece in half, short sides together.
- Place under the circle template making sure the folded edge aligns with the horizontal 90-degree line and the left side unfolded edges are flush with the left edge of the template.
- Place the 28mm rotary cutter into the 4” circle channel and trim the fabric. Note: you will not be able to cut all the way through to the edge.
- Use scissors to finish trimming the semicircle through the edge.
- Repeat the above steps with the remaining small semicircle fabric pieces.
Medium semicircles
Step 5:
- Fold one medium semicircle fabric piece in half, short sides together.
- Place the folded fabric under the circle template making sure the folded edge aligns with the horizontal 90-degree line and the left side unfolded edges are flush with the left edge of the template.
- Place the 28mm rotary cutter into the 8” circle channel and trim the fabric.
- Use scissors to finish trimming the semicircle through the edge.
- Repeat the above steps with the remaining medium semicircle fabric pieces.
Large semicircles
Step 6:
- Fold one large semicircle fabric piece in half, short sides together.
- Place the folded fabric under the circle template making sure the folded edge aligns with the horizontal 90-degree line and the left side unfolded edges are flush with the left edge of the template.
- Place the 28mm rotary cutter into the 12” circle channel and trim the fabric.
- Use scissors to finish trimming the semicircle through the edge.
- Repeat the above steps with the remaining large semicircle fabric pieces.
Step 7: Group semicircles together in sets of three as shown and set aside.
Ruffle Construction
Step 8: Cut ruffle fabric:
- (7) 2” x 11” strips
- (7) 2” x 20" strips
Step 9: Press all the strips in half to a 1” width.
Step 10: Find and mark the midpoint of each ruffle strip.
Step 11: With a scant ¼” seam allowance, sew long stitches along the unfolded edges of the ruffle strips. Make sure to leave long thread tails at both the beginning and end of the stitching.
Step 12: Gently pull the top thread on one end of the ruffle strip until gathers form. Repeat with the top thread on the other end. Gathering from both sides will lessen the chance of thread breakage. Repeat the gathering process for all ruffle strips.
Attaching the Ruffles
Step 13: Fold the small semicircles in half and use a disappearing ink pen to mark the center lines on the right side of the fabric.
Step 14: Pin an 11” ruffle to a small semicircle along the curved edge, matching center points. Adjust gathers as needed so they are evenly distributed along the edge.
Step 15: Baste the ruffle to the semicircle.
Step 16: Repeat the process for the remaining small semicircles and all the medium semicircles.
Attaching the Backings
Step 17:
Cut backing fabric:
- (7) 7 ½” x 12 ½”
- (7) 5 ½” x 8 ½”
- (7) 3 ½” x 4 ½”
Step 18:
Small semicircle:
- With right sides together, pin a 3 ½” x 4 ½” backing fabric piece to a small semicircle.
- Sew together, keeping the stitch line just to the left of the ruffle’s gathering stitches.
- Trim the backing fabric along the semicircle shape.
- Carefully clip notches around the curved section of the semicircle.
- Turn the semicircle right sides out and press. Use a point turner to help shape the seams.
- Repeat with the remaining small semicircles and corresponding backing pieces.
Step 19:
Medium and large semicircles:
- Use the 5 ½” x 8 ½” backing pieces to repeat Step 18 for the medium semicircles.
- Use the 7 ½” x 12 ½” backing pieces to repeat Step 18 for the large semicircles.
Step 20: Topstitch along the curved edges of all semicircles.
Constructing and Attaching the Binding
Step 21: Fold all semicircles in half and mark the center point with a pin.
Step 22: With right sides up, layer one set of three semicircles together, aligning the long edges and center points. Pin to hold.
Step 23: Use a long basting stitch to attach the semicircles together.
Step 24: Trim binding fabric into (5) 2 ½” x WOF (width of fabric) strips. Sew strips together to create one length of binding.
Step 25: Press the binding length in half.
Step 26: Find and mark the center point of the binding length.
Step 27: On the backing side of one semicircle set, find and mark the center point.
Step 28: Match the center point of the binding with the center point of the semicircle set. Pin the binding to the back side of the semicircle set with raw edges aligned.
Step 29: Keeping the sets about 1” apart, pin the binding to the backsides of the remaining semicircle sets. Place three sets to the right and three sets to the left of the center set.
Step 30: Sew ¼” from the raw edge along the entire binding length.
Step 31: Press the binding away from the semicircle sets.
Step 32: Press the ¼” seam allowance toward the folded edge in the “tail” sections of the binding.
Step 33: Fold the binding over to the semicircle fronts. Press and pin in place.
Step 34: Topstitch through all layers to secure.
Step 35: Hang up and enjoy.
And you’re done! Congratulations on making the Scalloped Bunting Garland!
