Step 1: Prepare the fruit slice base.

Step 2: With white yarn, start with a magic ring. 

Step 3: Round 1: Ch 2. Work 8 SC into the magic ring. Pull the ring closed and join with a sl st to the first SC. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through. (8 sts) 

Step 4: Round 2: Join orange yarn and ch 2. Work 2 HDC in each stitch around. Join with a sl st to the first HDC. (16 sts) 

Step 5: Round 3: Ch 2. Work 2 HDC in the first stitch, then 1 HDC in the next stitch. Repeat this sequence around. Join with a sl st to the first HDC. (24 sts)

Step 6: Round 4: Ch 2. Work 2 HDC in the first stitch, then 1 HDC in each of the next 2 stitches. Repeat this sequence around. Join with a sl st to the first HDC. (32 sts)

Step 7: Round 5: Ch 2. Work 2 HDC in the first stitch, then 1 HDC in each of the next 3 stitches. Repeat this sequence around. Join with a sl st to the first HDC. (40 sts)

Step 8: Round 6: Ch 2. Work 2 HDC in the first stitch, then 1 HDC in each of the next 4 stitches. Repeat this sequence around. Join with a sl st to the first HDC. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through. (48 sts) 💡 Note that round 7 is worked in SC instead of HDC.

Step 9: Round 7: Join white yarn and ch 1. Work 2 SC in the first stitch, then 1 SC in each of the next 5 stitches. Repeat this sequence around. Join with a sl st to the first SC. Cut the yarn, leaving a 30" tail. (56 sts)

Step 10: Round 8: Join orange yarn and ch 2. Work 2 HDC in the first stitch, then 1 HDC in each of the next 6 stitches. Repeat this sequence around. Join with a sl st to the first HDC. Cut the yarn and weave in the tail neatly using the tapestry needle. (64 sts)

👉 You have now completed your orange slice base. It should lay completely flat.

Step 11: Using a tapestry needle, thread the long white yarn tail left from Round 7. This yarn will be used to embroider the orange slice segments.

Step 12: Working from the back of the slice, insert the needle from back to front between the first increase point.. From the front of the slice, insert the needle through the center of the magic ring, creating a white line across the orange base. Gently pull the yarn through, but do not pull too tightly. The orange slice should remain flat.

💡 An increase is when you work two stitches into the same stitch from the previous round. The places where increases are made create the natural sections (or wedges) of your orange slice.

Step 13: Continue working around the slice by inserting the needle from back to front between each increase point and passing it through the center of the magic ring from the front.

Step 14: Repeat until all 8 wedges have been created.

👉 You have now completed your orange slice. You may move on to making additional orange slices or other fruit designs. If you would like to create a half slice, follow the steps below.

Step 15: Fold the orange slice base in half with the embroidered side facing outward. Align the edges and join both sides together with slip stitches (sl st) to close the circle into a half circle.

Work 32 sl st across the open edge to join the two layers together.

👉 Your half slice is complete. 

Step 16: Attach yarn to the edge of your fruit slice. Chain as many stitches as desired to create the loop for your keychain. Cut the yarn, leaving a long enough tail to secure the chain loop around the swivel hook D-ring. Using a tapestry needle, attach the charm to the swivel hook by wrapping the thread securely around the D-ring and the chain loop several times. Do not worry too much about the finishing, as this area will be covered later.

Step 17: With yellow yarn, make a magic ring. Work 10 SC into the magic ring. Pull the ring closed and join with a sl st to the first SC. (10 sts)

Step 18: You will now create 5 petals around the flower. Change to red yarn.

Step 19: In the next stitch, work ch 3, sc4tog, ch 3 in the same stitch. Slip stitch into the next stitch. 

Step 20: Each petal is worked into every other stitch. Repeat this petal sequence around the flower until all 5 petals have been created. Fasten off, leaving a 15" tail. 

Step 21: Thread the tapestry needle with the long tail from one flower. Place a flower on the outside of the D-ring and wrap the yarn around the charm chain several times to secure it in place. Knot the yarn and weave in the end. 

Step 22: Thread the tapestry needle with the long tail from the second flower. Place the flower wrong sides together (wst) with the previously attached flower. Sew the two flowers together, knot the yarn, and weave in the end.
