Yo-Yo Construction (approximate finished size of each yo-yo is 2 ¾”)
Step 1: Cut yo-yo fabric into 6 ½” squares:
- 32 red squares
- 26 white squares
- 12 blue squares
Step 2: Fold the square in half.
Step 3: Fold the square in half again, with the folds along the left and bottom sides.
Step 4: Place the folded square under the circle template, making sure the folded corner aligns with the 90-degree line markings and the unfolded edges clear the 6” circle channel.
Step 5: Place the 28mm rotary cutter into the 6” circle channel and trim the square into a circle shape.
Step 6: Place fabric circle wrong side up on a flat surface and glue baste a ¼” seam around the entire circle circumference. Tip: Use a 5” paper template centered on the circle to achieve a consistent seam allowance.
Step 7: Thread needle with a double heavy-duty thread and knot ends. Make ¼” to ½” long running stitches around the circle circumference. Keep stitches close to the folded edge.
Step 8: Gently pull the threads to gather the stitched edge toward the center. Once gathered, knot threads to secure and leave needle threaded.
Step 9: Run a threaded needle through all the gathers for added stability. Finish with a few stitches and a knot to hold in place. Bury the knot and trim thread ends.
Step 10: Repeat Steps 2 – 9 for the remaining fabric squares.
Step 11: Match buttons to yo-yos.
Step 12: Sew buttons to yo-yo centers using 3-strands of a coordinating embroidery floss.
Step 13: Place a small strip of basting tape on the back of each yo-yo.
Background Construction
Step 14: Cut background fabric and fusible fleece to 25” w x 35” h.
Step 15: Adhere fusible fleece to background piece following the manufacturer’s directions.
Step 16: Quilt background in desired pattern. We did a 1” diagonal grid of straight-line quilting.
Attaching Yo-Yos to Background
Step 17: Use a disappearing ink pen to mark the center yo-yo line.
Step 18: Starting with the center line, lay out yo-yos on the quilted background and determine placement. Tip: Take a photo of the finalized layout so you can remember yo-yo placement.
Step 19: Working one row at a time, remove the paper backing from the basting tape and adhere yo-yos to the background.
Step 20: Stitch yo-yos to the background using long running stitches and making sure to catch only the bottom layer of fabric.
Step 21: Use a ruler to keep the alignment of each row straight relative to the background edges.
Casing Construction
Step 22: On the wrong side of the backing fabric, make a mark 2” and 3” down from the top edge on both sides. This will be the casing openings.
Step 23: With right sides together, pin the backing fabric to the background.
Step 24: Sew backing fabric to the background using a ½” seam allowance making sure to stop and start at casing openings and leaving a 5” opening along the bottom edge for turning.
Step 25: Clip the corners and turn wall hanging right sides out through the opening at the bottom edge.
Step 26: Press seams flat and topstitch around wall hanging about 1/8” from edge being careful to stop and start at casing openings.
Step 27: Mark casing stitch lines on back of wall hanging. Sew along lines, backstitching at starts and stops.
Step 28: Insert a dowel rod through casing.
Step 29: Gather ribbon lengths and secure together using clear elastic bands.
Step 30: Lay ribbon clusters over dowel and attach to rod using additional clear elastic bands.
Step 31: Trim ribbon ends to desired lengths and enjoy your Yo-Yo Flag Wall Hanging.
And you’re done! Congratulations on making the Yo-Yo Flag Wall Hanging
